VariCAD 2023 v2.08 instal2/18/2024 One of the major selling points for me is the incredible array of free software that is available - software that not only is free, but is constantly being updated by folks around the world, AND it is almost obscenely easy to install. I did not try it long enough to see if there were any issues, but I am strongly considering installing it as a dual-boot, with the view towards gradually transitioning over to Linux as my primary OS. I tried the Ubuntu Live-CD on my newer laptop, and wow was it fast and slick! And it seemed to recognize all the hardware. The information I read mostly went over my head, but nonetheless I was able to get it running. The wireless PCMCIA card that I had to use with it is one that has some issues - starting with lack of support from the card/chipset manufacturers - and I had to do some digging on the internet to find out how to get it running. These are minimal specs for Xubuntu, and it does not run particularly fast. I have Xubuntu running on an old laptop - AMD K6 (remember those?), 333 MHz, 192 MB of RAM, 4g hard drive. A recent thread detoured into a discussion about the merits of Linux:īecause of this thread, and after consulting with my Linux-guru brother, I downloaded both Ubuntu and Xubuntu - the latter being a trimmed-down distribution designed for machines with less horsepower.
